The comedic motion picture directed by Mario Monicelli and starring Alberto Sordi, depicts early nineteenth-century episodes in the life of a nobleman in Rome, the Marquis of Grillo: a good-natured, clever and women-loving man who is always inventing stories and cracking all types of jokes. The film is loosely based on folkloric accounts of the real Onofrio del Grillo (who lived in the eighteenth century), who is said to have played a number of fantastic pranks, one even involving Pope Pius VII.
